Orthopedic ONE Training Tip #2
Weightless Workout: The AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®
The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is a traditional treadmill that uses NASA technology to allow users to run/walk at anywhere from 20-100% of their body weight. Professional athletes and patients alike can see incredible results from this advanced technology, as the ability to unload the body in an effort to decrease the effects of gravity is beneficial in both rehabilitation and training environments.
Every day, physical therapists and sport medicine professionals use this device to help runners and athletes rehab from injury by starting them off running/walking as low as 20% of their body weight and then progressing based on their tolerance to the loading. Even runners who have been fortunate enough to avoid an injury can take advantage of this technology. When used during recovery/training runs, athletes are able to increase their mileage and volume while decreasing the likelihood of injury while improving their performance.
LOCAL ALTERG SUCCESS STORY
Recently, CRC runner, Dr. Christina Murphy used the AlterG to rehab from an injury to her right foot, a combination of plantar fasciitis and nerve damage. Even after her condition improved, she continued to incorporate the AlterG into her training to aid her volume/mileage ramp-up as she prepared to compete in the US Olympic Marathon Trials. Check out the video below to see Dr. Murphy running on the AlterG at Orthopedic ONE’s Upper Arlington Therapy Services location!
Over four years ago, Orthopedic ONE became the first practice in central Ohio to adopt this technology. The AlterG is utilized as both a rehabilitation and performance tool to provide our patients and athletes with the highest possible quality of care. We presently have six AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills housed at our various physical therapy clinics throughout the area.
We have found that our runners are able to get back to their training programs more quickly when they utilize the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill compared to other rehabilitation methods. This technology allows injuries to be managed more effectively with fewer training days lost, so it goes without saying that our patients and athletes love the “G”!
Still need more convincing? Watch as Oregon Project Coach and Olympic Marathoner, Alberto Salazar, praises the benefits of the AlterG as a revolutionary form of cross training. Salazar also speaks about the value this technology has personally given him and the runners he trains.
