Malaika completed the 2018 winter-to-spring season of Walk & Run 101, our beginner walk/run program. Here, she tells us why training with CRC was exactly the jumpstart she needed.
I remember the thoughts that went through my head when making the decision of whether or not to join the Walk & Run 101 program. I had never run (or even walked) a race of any length. I was worried that I would be the only person that was completely new to running; I worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the expectations of the program; and most of all I worried that maybe this wasn’t for me.
Fortunately, I didn’t let any of those fears keep me from signing up, which was a decision that changed my life in so many amazing ways. From day one, I realized that I had not only made the right decision, but that all of those fears were completely unfounded.
The CRC staff and the group that I trained with were so incredibly supportive. I made friends that I continue to stay in touch with to this day. I learned that I was capable of more than I would have ever imagined. Every week, I was gaining more distance and even more confidence. When the day finally arrived to run my first 5k, I was not only ready, I was absolutely thrilled! As I crossed the finish line, I knew that was only the beginning.
I have run in several races since then, and I have no intentions of stopping. My advice for anyone considering this program is to not let your fears keep you from trying it out. Give it a chance, and I promise you won’t regret it!
