Katie completed the 2018 winter-to-spring season of Walk & Run 101, our beginner walk/run program. Here, she tells us how that first step helped her to accomplish a year's worth of major running milestones.
The Walk & Run 101 program and Coach Lisa gave me the courage to start RUNNING! I knew that I wanted to try running, but always had thoughts of, “Can I do this?” and “Am I a runner?” and, more importantly, “How do I start?” This program showed me that not only were there so many others just like me, but we all had what it took to CRUSH our own goals!
For me, I wasn’t quite sure where I wanted running to take me at first. After completing the program, it was clear to me that I didn’t want to stop any time soon. In the short time after completing my first 5K race, I started signing up for more events. A 5K here, a 10K, a few more 5Ks, and then had the crazy idea (or half crazy) to run my first half marathon in August.
I definitely had some doubts and wondered if I could go from never running to running 13.1 in such short of time but I knew I wanted to try! I put in the time, and the miles, and you know what? I DID IT! I can’t explain how excited I was to have completed something like this after only months of running.
Flash forward to almost my one-year anniversary of finishing Walk & Run 101 and I’ve completed 12 races this year, including two half marathons. I am NO DIFFERENT than anyone else starting their running journey. I had my doubts and still do sometimes—but take it one step at a time and you can do it! If it weren’t for the Walk & Run 101 program to help get me started, I’m not sure I would have taken that first step!
