NOVEMBER RUNNING TAT OF THE MONTH Ryan Mulcahy,
There is no 'I' in team. There is an 'I' in Running. Which brings us to an age old debate. Is running more of a team sport or an individual sport? There is no 'I' in basketball. There is no 'I' in football, baseball, or soccer. RunnIng. Now, you can run on a scoring team. You can race a marathon all by your lonesome. Think about it for a moment, and take your side. Keep thinking. Feel free to stop reading now, take a day or two to ponder, and come back. Bookmark our tat page, even. Ok, done? It took us a while, too. The debate recently surfaced again at the weekly CRC owners and $3 burgers Wednesday night meeting at Brazenhead. This time, however, it was Ryan Mulcahy who tilted the scales. Why? Well the very first thing he did when he got his tat, located on his thigh at the short line, was put on some short shorts to debut it to his team during the last interval of their workout. The same day he got it. He didn't show his Mama. Or his significant other. Or his best buddy since the 2nd grade. He debuted it to the team. "I showed up to track practice and busted out some small shorts on the last interval to show it off," says Ryan. Again, no "I" in team. The next year he went to Elizabethtown College (Etown), where there was an estimated 43 tattoo's painted among 18 different guys. Team showers must have been like a trip to the Louvre. Ryan actually got the tattoo in high school, the day he turned eighteen. Depending on what part of Pennsylvania you live in, the local high school kids skip school for one of two things- hunting or tattooing. For Ryan, the trip went beyond the art. His brother, who also attended Etown, had previously gotten the Roadrunner tattoo. "My brother Sean...is the one who got me into running," said Ryan. Beyond symbolizing the passion Ryan has for running, the tattoo "is a reminder of the great times he and I have shared being on the roads and putting in miles together." According to Ryan, his brother Sean is the person who kick started my running and one of the largest influences in my life. "After seeing the hard work he put in throughout college running, I really wanted to do the same and hopefully progress as much as he did," said Ryan. Recently Ryan transferred schools to SUNY Geneseo. Amazingly, there is no other tattoo on his team. If we've learned anything from this Tat of the Month it's that there is no 'I' in team. Expect to see some SUNY G tat's on this site in the future.... Congrats to Ryan on earning a $15 gift certificate to the CRC and to Evolved. Do you want to be the running tat of the month? Send us a picture at info@columbusrunning.com or stop by the store. Please let us know why, how, and when you got the tattoo... Tat of the Month Archive
