October 2006 Tat of the Month Patrick Gaynor - 26 years old, Warhawk from Chicago, IL Turn on the discovery channel and you might learn about a baby hawks plight from infancy to adulthood. Turn on the Running Tat of the Month website and learn how the tat of the month contest has morphed into Patrick's beast of a tattoo this October. The October Tat champion has done something no person has done before- give us two submissions of his amazing tattoo, one sans color and one with color. It comes to life right before your eyes. Given the great attention to detail it's also clear that a tattoo of this magnitude has been forming in Patrick's head for some time now. Patrick's thoughts verbatim are in red text below. Our comments follow... The Tattoo is my tribute to my days as a competitive runner. I ran for the University of Wisconsin Whitewater from 1998 – 2003. We have respect for those who attend UWW. They have a sweet cross country course and a purple indoor track. It really wigs you out at first glance. Now you readers have a real reason to go to Wisconsin. If you don't like indoor tracks, they also have a nice bowling alley. The school mascot is the Warhawks. We are sure Patrick's tattoo would look sweet on the school's football helmets. Running in college was the single greatest experience of my life, and something that I never wanted to forget. Many of my teammates became my best friends, and the joy of training and competing with your best friends on the orb brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. We at the CRC understand completely. We loved running so much in college we spent all of our money on a running store. We have yet to make enough return on our investment to get our own running tats. It will happen, though, and we dream of creating one as sweet as Patricks. Yes, the creators of the running tat of the month don't have tattoo's. That's a topic for another day. Back to Patrick's thoughts. So, I got this tattoo as a tribute to my team. It represents the predator that one needs to become in order to survive in competitive distance running. You have to get out there and give it your best every single time or you’ll never make it. The hawk is obviously a representation of the Warhawks, and you can notice a little mouse about to get hunted down by the hawks talons, representing the natural competition, kill or be killed. That is the attention to detail that makes one hell of a tattoo. The natural competition of kill or be killed can also be seen on the discovery channel, but learning about it off some dude's leg in downtown Chicago is infinitely cooler. Then the banner above the hawk states “Trials of Miles, Miles of Trials” which is my favorite line from Once a Runner. That book was voted #1 running book of all time at the 2005 CRC running book of all time awards. Seriously, it is a must read. It always reminds me that each moment of tolerated pain during a race has been worked for by the thousands of miles we run. Very true and well said. We imagine that the hours of artwork on the leg was a bit painful as well. Now look at the great results. Thanks for sharing your tattoo, you truly are a Tat of the Month Champion. Congrats to Patrick on earning some fine CRC merchandise. Do you want to be the running tat of the month? Send us a picture at info@columbusrunning.com or stop by the store. Please let us know why, how, and when you got the tattoo... Tat of the Month Archive
