Your Personal Running and Walking Store Experience

“Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible…”

                                  - William Shakespeare

We’ve taken some inspiration from the immortal bard this summer and tried for the impossible.  And why not?  It seems that Shakespeare could have been a runner himself, so the writer makes a good guide for all of us.  Our evidence of Shakespeare’s hobby is clear.  For one, he has some great running quotes.  Add to that England’s long and storied running tradition, with heroes like Roger Bannister, the first man to run under 4 minutes for the mile, and Paula Radcliffe, the marathon machine herself.  Plus, we’ve all seen images of Shakespeare in tights.  Who else but a runner would go out in public like that?

In striving for things impossible, so far this summer, we’ve celebrated the store’s second anniversary, hosted a race that ran through a Home Depot, and put on a high school cross country camp.  You want to talk about impossible?  Try keeping up with a camp of cross country runners for a week!  (camp pictures are here) Add to that our ongoing marathon training group, the weekly group runs and clinics, and the monthly beginner’s running clinics & it has been a busy but fun summer!
In this newsletter, you’ll find all manner of upcoming events that we’ve planned for the late summer and early fall season.  From 5ks to visiting speakers to a high school & community cross country race, there’s a lot going on.  As always, keep an eye on ColumbusRunning.com for info on further events.  We like to keep the calendar packed with options.  We hope to see you at a run or walk sometime soon!

Join us for the Red-Tail Run, a new 5k run and walk designed with Ohio Wildlife in mind! All proceeds benefit the Ohio Wildlife Center and Ohio native wildlife.
The 5k will begin and end at the Ohio Wildlife Center's Wildlife Conservation and Education Facility, located in the Shawnee Hills area near Dublin, Powell, and the Columbus Zoo.  This loop course traverses between two small lakes, along tree-lined country roads, and into the OWC’s conservation facility.
All race entrants receive a FREE entry into the OWC’s annual WildFest, where you can enjoy live folk music, wagon rides, fishing, nature tours, puppet shows, the Fort Morrow Long Rifles Encampment, and more!

You’ll find the start, finish, and WildFest all together at 2661 Billingsly Rd in Columbus, OH 43235.  Pre-registration guarantees you a shirt, and age group prizes include photos of the winners with a red tail hawk.  Come see the other animals, too!

We’re excited to announce that the CRC has added a new shoe brand to our ever-expanding shoe wall!  With the addition of Saucony, we’re proud to offer yet another option for our fellow runners in the area.
With the new brand, we’re also introducing a new section to the CRC newsletter: pronunciation lessons.  See, you become a more well-rounded person when you read the CRC newsletter.  Now, as far as the brand’s name goes, we’ve heard a million ways to pronounce “Saucony.”  If you want to impress your running friends with your mastery of running lingo, you’ll call this one “Saw - kun - eee.”  Don’t you feel smarter?

The CRC and Abercrombie and Fitch would like to offer a great big “CONGRATS” to the top two teams in the A&F Mascot Challenge.  Held as a part of the CRC’s Mile Dash, the Mascot Challenge is an opportunity for local teams to show their school spirit for all to see.  Student athletes, coaches, and families take part...and one member of the team runs the race while dressed as the school mascot.  Leprechauns danced, Comets flew, Wildcats roared, and Shamrocks...well, they did whatever Shamrocks do.
All participating teams walked away with a gift box of prizes, but the top two teams came away with the BIG prizes.  We’d like to graciously thank Abercrombie for donating $1000 to the athletic departments of the top two placing teams.  As a fundraiser, the Mascot Challenge was a great success and another fun twist to the CRC’s anniversary celebrations.
Congrats to the Hilliard Davidson girls and Dublin Scioto girls for their first and second place efforts!

Forget the loneliness of the long distance runner, those miles can roll by when you’re in the middle of a running conversation.  For those looking for others to share the miles with, we offer the following group runs:

· Saturday mornings at 8am.  These social runs take place every week at both our Dublin and Pickerington locations.  Loose and informal, these runs are a chance to unwind from the long week and enjoy the company of others on the trails.

· Monday nights at 8pm.  This Dublin-based run is for those looking for a quicker crowd to run with.  Pace ranges from 6:45 to 7:15 per mile - for some, the night run is an easy run, for others, it represents a challenge.  All are welcome.

· Sunday afternoons at 4:30pm.  This run is for all the high school and college runners in the area who are looking for some summer training and a chance to meet runners from other schools.  We’ll meet at a different Metro Park each week for the run.  For the run calendar, go to www.ColumbusRunning.com/harriers.htm

· Wednesday afternoons at 6:30pm.  Another Dublin-based run, this is our track workout day.  For anyone interested in some speedwork, we begin the workout at 6:30pm at the Karrer Middle School track, one mile from the Dublin store.  Come to the Dublin store at 6:00 if you want to run a warm-up out to the track with us.

Get ready for the fall harvest season with us on Sunday, October 1st at the Maize 5k.  Lace up your shoes and run or walk your way through the countryside to the finish line, where you receive FREE entry into the twisting, turning paths of central Ohio’s finest corn maze!
All race registrants receive a FREE PUMPKIN from the pumpkin patch at the finish of the race, free entry into the maze, and plenty of refreshments.  Jumpstart your fall festivities with us at this family event.  All race proceeds will go to benefit Andrew Zanko, a local college student who suffered a serious skiiing accident this past winter.

The race begins at 2pm on the 1st, but show up by 1:30pm at the latest in order to take the hayride out to the starting line.  Full info on the race, the corn maze, and the full line of festivities can be found online at:   www.ColumbusRunning.com/maize5k.htm

On the website you’ll find a few more good reasons to come out on the 1st.  For the kids, there are slides, tunnels, farm animals, a goat walk, a corn box (think sandbox…) and a mini-maze.  For the kid in the rest of us, there are hay rides, food, and more.  The CRC guys are most excited about two things though:
  1. The Corn Cannon.  It’s exactly what it sounds like.  How far can corn blast from a cannon?  We don’t know, but we plan to find out at the start the race!
  2. The Greased Pole.  There’s a five dollar bill placed at the top of a greased metal pole.  Anyone who can climb the pole can claim the money.  We love a challenge...

Our friends at John Bingham Racing are at it again - with the success of their Columbus Distance Classic, the downtown half marathon each spring, they’ve decided to launch a second central Ohio road race.  Partnering with the LPGA, JBR is bringing the aptly named FORE! Miler to Dublin on Tuesday, August 22nd.  Come for four miles of fun & stay for the free beer and concert.  You’ll even get a glimpse of the soon-to-be-complete Corazon spa and health club.  For more information, check out www.JohnBinghamRacing.com

Local standout Josh Ordway, a member of Team CRC and ultra-busy med school student, managed to fit in a run at the RRCA’s national 5k championships this summer.  The Debbie Green 5k in West Virginia was selected to host the national championships, and Ordway came away from the race with an impressive victory.

The American win marks the second RRCA national championship that Ordway has won, with the first coming at the half marathon distance last summer.  Dr. Ordway best be keeping up with his running between classes now, as he has a date with the Olympic Trials marathon coming up in November of 2007 in New York City…
  - On the college side of the running world, Ohio State recently named their new head track coaches for men and women.  The women see Karen Dennis taking the helm, while the men find two-time Olympic distance runner Robert Gary leading the team.  On both the Big Ten and NCAA levels, the future looks bright for our Buckeyes.
  - Team CRC has, in the past, put themselves on the line for any challenge.  Few have braved the fury of the team, but a contingent of Cincinnasti’s top runners have thrown down the gauntlet.  A showdown of epic proportions will take place at Otterbein College's Cross Country course on Sept. 23rd.  Team Earth Drummers better bring their “A” game, along with an appetite for BBQ after the race.  It’s on!
  - And finally, it’s with arms wide open that Team CRC welcomes our newest teammate, Mike Sawicki.  The multi-time NCAA Div III All American from Otterbein brings some much needed tattoos and piercings to the team, along with some quick PR’s and high goals.  Cheer Mike on when you see him at the races!

For those looking to combine a passion for running with a day of eating, look ahead to October and the Run for Spaghetti.  This 5k, run within and around the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, is catered at the finish line by the Florentine.  Race day is Saturday, October 7th.  Bring your running shoes and a big appetite!  Awards for the top three male and female finishers are etched glass plates, but EVERYONE gets that plate of pasta for finishing.  All race proceeds benefit the Lower Lights Christian Health Center.
It’s never too early to plan ahead, so clear your November schedule for the annual running of the Trot for Tots!  Last year’s event, with the option of a 3k run/walk or a 10k run, was a classic - we hope to see a lot of familiar faces, and plenty of new ones, as we look to help out the Children’s Hospital  once again.  Z
The date to remember is November 12, and the race will go off at 9am from Dublin Coffman High School.  For full info, check out the race site at:

www.ColumbusRunning.com/dublint4t.htm

  See you at the Trot!!!

What goes hand-in-hand with running better than eating?  We sure couldn’t think of anything, which is why the CRC guys will be down at the Lower Lights Run for Spaghetti this fall.  The 5k race is run entirely within Franklin Park near downtown Columbus on Saturday, October 7th.  Start time is 10am, and your FREE pasta lunch will be waiting for you at the park shelter just beyond the finish line.  Think of all those noodles. And speaking of noodles, your muscles will feel like one after a free post race massage courtesy of All proceeds go towards the Lower Lights Christian Health Center.  The free pasta lunch is courtesy of the Florentine.

Donate your old shoes!

As always, the CRC is taking used shoe donations.  There’s always a place for those unused shoes that are buried at the back of your closet.  While we generally ship the shoes to a community and children’s running camp in rural Brazil, we occasionally donate the shoes to other causes as well - because of your donations, we were able to ship five crates of gently used shoes to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  So bring those old shoes by & we’ll find a new home for them!  Thanks!!!
