Your Personal Running and Walking Experience

CRC Holiday
Newsletter

Welcome to the first ever Columbus Running Company newsletter!  Inside, you’ll find information on our winter races, the CRC’s Capital City Half Marathon training plan, the newest advances in running and walking gear, discount information, and more!

It’s been an exciting first several months in the Columbus area for us, and we want to thank you all for stopping in the store, joining us on our group runs and at our monthly beginner’s running clinics, and welcoming us into the wonderful running community here in central Ohio.

If it’s been a while since you’ve stopped in at the store, we’ve grown by leaps and bounds since opening this past summer.  As much as things change, though, some things stay the same—we still strive to bring you the best service and advice to allow you to fully enjoy your running and walking.  This is our passion, and we’re glad that we’ve been able to share it with you.

Have a happy holiday!

Tips for Surviving the

Winter

With the cold days of winter before us, it’s common to feel a slump in motivation.  The trick to avoiding the winter blues is to keep your running and walking fresh and fun...and warm!  Use the following tips to get you through those blustery days ahead:

· Layer your clothes.  You want to create a layer of insulation between you and the frosty world around you.  Use a technical fabric underneath to wick away moisture. By wearing multiple layers, you can keep yourself warmer and drier so that you can enjoy those miles.

· Find a running buddy.  It’s hard to make excuses about a missed day when you have someone relying on you.  The miles go by far more quicker when you have someone else there by your side.  Make it an event with hot chocolate and easy stretching at the finish of each group run.

· Cross-train.  Although we prefer to hit the trails for a good run, now is a good time to enjoy that gym membership and take full advantage of the pool, elliptical machine, treadmill, and weights.  The added fitness will only help your running and walking, and the change of activities will break up the routine.

· Sign up for a race.  Having a goal makes it much easier to keep motivation up.  Whether you’re training for a spring half marathon or gearing up for a winter race, we’d love to help with the motivation—check out the Cap City Half training plan as well as the info on our winter 5k’s.

· Go for a Holiday Lights Run.  Find a neighborhood filled with holiday decorations and take a run through the twinkling lights and mistletoe.

Enjoy the winter miles!

Holiday Wish Lists From C.R.C.
some ideas for the holidays

For Mom:

-The Complete Book of Women’s Running, from Runner’s World.  This handy book covers every topic and question a female runner could ever come up with from general fitness to diet and body image to apparel—even to running while pregnant.  A great resource.

-A winter running jacket.  Women tend to bundle up more than men while exercising during the colder months of the year, and a good lightweight jacket is the perfect way to keep the cold out while looking good this winter.

-The Stick massage device.  Like its slogan says, The Stick is “for happy muscles.”  This massage device is used at four Olympic training centers for a reason—it relieves muscle pain, helps prevent injury, and just feels good.

For Dad:

-A reflective vest.  Those dark days of winter can be dangerous for walkers and runners.  To help motorists spot Dad as he crosses the streets while putting the miles in, get him a reflective running vest, leg bands, or a safety light.

-Long sleeve technical shirt.  Staying warm in the winter is all about layering.  A long sleeve tech shirt, made to wick moisture away to keep the body dry and warm, helps make those winter miles enjoyable.  Look for the red “Breath Thermo” label for shirts with Mizuno’s newest synthetic fiber—these shirts are made with a synthetic that actually traps the body’s lost heat and uses it to keep Dad warm.

For the Techie in the family:

-Timex Heart Rate Monitor + Speed and Distance System.  By monitoring a run via GPS, this piece from Timex allows the Techie runner to chart exact speed, distance covered, and heart rate.  All of the feedback you could ever dream of!

For the young runner in the family:

-Running posters.  From running’s cult hero, Steve Prefontaine, to Olympic champions Billy Mills and Emil Zatopek to the King of the Roads himself, Bill Rodgers, running posters of the greats look great and convey inspiration.

-Under Armor.  These shirts and tights, aside from being the trendy pick, are formfitting, warm, and a favorite of most high school athletes.

-Any running book.  Books about Alan Webb and Frank Shorter or by running greats like Suzy Favor Hamilton get the young runner in the family excited about the sport, teach them the history of running, and offer invaluable advice from the pros.

For the REALLY young runner in the family:

-Baby Jogger.  Bring the little one with you on those runs and walks!  Baby Jogger, with its comfortable seat, cushy shocks, and safety hand brake allow you to put the miles in with the future runner in the family.
