Bio:
I began running in eighth grade when a friend explained to
me that track was a co-ed sport. My real interest never
panned out for me that season, but I got hooked on sprinting
instead. My real interest never panned out for methat season, but I got hooked on
sprinting instead. The high school cross country team in La
Porte, Indiana was on a roll at the time, and when the
coach, Jack Bransford, asked me to come out for his team, I
was there in a heartbeat. I’m not sure what he saw in me.
At our team time trial the August before my freshman year of
high school began, I ran in jean shorts and borrowed shoes
as I crossed the finish line in just over 27 minutes. By
the end of senior year, I was consistently running in the
low 16’s for cross and racing the 400m through the 1600m on
the track. The cross team finished 5th at state
my freshman year, in the one-division format used in
Indiana, and we were ranked as high as 2nd my
senior year when I was the number two man on the team.
In college, I ran for DePauw University after being
recruited by coach Kori Stoffregen. The DPU team was in a
rebuilding phase with a new, young coach, and I liked the
idea of being a part of that. Over four years, I steadily
dropped my PR’s as the team improved as well. By the end of
four years, the team was winning the SCAC conference meet in
track and cross every year, and the cross country team
qualified for the NCAA Div III National Championships my
senior year. Individually, I qualified for two cross
country national meets and one outdoor track championship.
At the track national meet in Minnesota at the end of my
senior year, I finished 5th in both the 5000m and
10,000m to earn All American honors in both events.
After graduation, I went on to Indiana State University to
work towards my M.A. while working as a graduate assistant
coach at DePauw. My own running took a backseat to the
needs of the team that I worked with, but I managed to buy
groceries off of minor road race earnings for two years.
Once finished with my M.A. work, I moved to the Columbus
area to open up the Columbus Running Company with former
college teammate Matt DeLeon.
Running has played a huge role in my life. It’s taken me
around the country and around the world – through running
and coaching, I’ve earned trips to places as varied as
Spokane to San Antonio to the Twin Cities to upstate New
York and even Amsterdam. I’ve run up and down the hills of
my mother’s home country of Brazil and along the dirt paths
of the Australian Outback and I’ve been to the Iffley Road
Track in England where Roger Bannister first broke the four
minute mile. I can’t imagine life without a pair of well
worn running shoes and another route ahead. Running is a
part of who I am. |
